Better support for media and assets

This is a theme of work which is all about giving some love to non-text content.
We've always been a bit bias to the written word, so this will balance that by building out some nice new digital asset management capabilities into the product. Replacing the old 'Files' area with something a lot more flexible and scaleable.
The aim is to make it possible to embed images and assets inside text fields, to tag them and add some meta-data, and to re-use them across multiple items.
As always, please get in touch if you'd like to get involved in testing this work or to share any thoughts.

Due to a change in our commitments last year to improve and deliver hierarchy in the content hub, our plans to release a new way to manage assets took a backseat. Our priority right now is to drastically improve our authoring experience, which covers areas such as content creation, commenting, revisions and structure. Improvements to assets clearly falls into this area in some regard (for example inline images) but won't be reflected in this specific feature request. The individual requests that made up this theme of work have now been unmerged so we can better track those individual requests. For that reason, this request will now be closed. Thanks for your participation.

Does this capability enhancement also cover a CDN publication point i.e. a help article with inline images authored in GC which is subsequently published on a help center portal?

It seems counter-intuitive to have to download a file and then re-upload it.
We have set out specific image fields for our website rebuild project and we would prefer to put the images in there.
What we would really like to be able to do is drag and drop from the media section into image areas within the project.

in progress
Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your input here 🙌
We've now started work on this, by completely reviewing our infrastructure for managing files and media. This should open a lot of doors!
The first releases should start coming out in the next few weeks, with our priorities being allowing you to embed images in text fields, and viewing them full screen.
We'll keep you updated here with our progress, and please let us know what you would most like to see.

I would love to have blog articles with in-line images. Having a collection of images at the end in an assets field leaves me confused about where they are supposed to belong within the text. I did see there is a tag for wordpress [IMAGE: filename.png]. However, it doesn't seem to work with the HTML preview or Docx export.

This is now planned, and due to be started in early 2019.
